I said new favourite Chaser moment, not yay the men have saved us from sexism.
I was surprised and impressed that The Chaser didn’t make a single reference to the media hoopla around Jill Meagher and the ensuing gendered debates, and I was nervous that they’d poke fun at the feminism after the Gillard speech.
I was relieved when they instead produced a piece that satirised team “sexism is over!” so thoroughly, while also humorously acknowledging that they were a bunch of (white) men. I loved that they made casual sexism so obviously outrageous, and so undeniable, that it was funny. It was funny that people thought this casual sexist behaviour, usually taken for granted, was ok! That’s fantastic.
Of course it would be great if the ABC, and society generally, could make more room for a satirical comedy program that happens to be created by a group of women. And this does not mean that the ABC is now a wonderful bastion of women’s rights. It only means The Chaser, who I happen to be a fan of even though their jokes fall flat half the time, made a skit that presented an important truth in a funny, easily digested way. It’s just one step, a tiny step, but every step is important.
