NEVER TRUST PLACES CALLED DRAGON INN. I STAYED AT ONE IN S’PORE, AND IT WAS THE DODGIEST PLACE EVER & THERE WERE STAINS ON THE BED & I THINK THERE WERE PROSTITUTES HAVING SEX NEXT DOOR & I MADE AN EXCUSE & LEFT W/O STAYING THE NIGHT & HOSTELLED .

Bit late! It was actually the worst hostel I have ever stayed in. Compare this “private twin with ensuite”:

A-Inn Hostel, Hong Kong.

With these far cheaper private twin rooms with ensuites in Shanghai and Chengdu:

Top: Lazybones Hostel, Chengdu
Bottom: Rock&Wood International Youth Hostel, Shanghai.

But I think that’s just what you have to deal with if you want to stay in Hong Kong. Especially Mong Kok. Never again.

I am currently in a hostel with my brother and it’s a fantastic hostel in every way…

jessinchina:

Except the door to the ensuite with the shower and toilet is made of glass. CLEAR, SHINY GLASS.

Good thing we’re headed to Hong Kong at 2pm (5pm AEST).

I'm putting all my photos up at jessinchina.tumblr.com

I don’t want to put them here so my parents and family won’t read this and cramp my style, and China has blocked the website you use to reblog things from yourself so I can’t post them here without having to do everything twice… so follow me there! China has cool things you want to see!

Incidentally, China has also blocked .tumblr domains but not tumblr itself for some reason, so I can’t visit any of your blogs. :(

I'm thinking that when I go to Shanghai in January, I might just get around on foot.

Suddenly Metro and Connex don’t look so bad.

Being as obsessed with crazy travel itineraries as I am, within 8 hours of finding out that I was going to China I have a super crazy one organised.
3rd January to 13th of January: Introduction to Chinese Law at Shanghai University College of Law.

13th/14th of January: The bro arrives in Shanghai.

Leave Shanghai Monday 16th of Jan for Hong Kong.
Hop on and off trains at random towns/cities along the coast (if that’s possible, and if there’s anything worth seeing) from 17th – 19th.
Arrive in Hong Kong Thursday the 19th/Friday the 20th (therefore hopefully missing New Years transport crowds).

Fancy dinner in Hong Kong Sunday the 22nd of Jan for Chinese New Years Eve (like actual Chinese people! Which we are. 1/32).

Monday the 23rd is New Years Day! Party times with those crazy dragon head parades!

Public holiday until 25th Jan.
Leave Hong Kong Thursday the 26th Jan, head for Xian. Long trip; allow 27th (Friday) for travel.
In Xian for 28th and 29th (Saturday and Sunday). Terracotta Warriors and temples.

Travel to Beijing on Monday the 30th.
Leave early on the 31st to be in Harbin for the Ice Festival.

Go back to Beijing on the 2nd. Go see the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, and I’m sure some other awesomeness that I don’t know about yet.

Lantern Festival in Beijing on the 5th of February.

I’m not really sure what we’ll do after that but we’ll be flying out of either Beijing or Shanghai approximately a week later.
So. Excited.
If anyone sees this and has been to China, and can think of some things we can do that I’ve missed, or can think of any improvements to my itinerary (eg. Is Beijing where we should be for the lantern festival? Is the Harbin Ice Festival worth the average maximum temperature in Jan/Feb of -15 C? Should we spend New Year in Hong Kong or might it be more spectacular elsewhere?) or any tips on hostels or communicating or to tell me I’m insane or anything really, I would be incredibly appreciative.

I’ve got friends in SA for their social work placement atm it looks so beautiful! (Plus they’re doing some really great sw as well…)

dancinginthefire replied to your post: Waiting for an email to tell me whether I’m going to China or South Africa this January/February.

What are you going for?

If I go to China it’s for a winter law subject in Shanghai, if to South Africa it’s for a volunteer law and human rights internship in Cape Town.

I don’t think there’s a strict selection criteria for the South Africa project because I pay for it, so it’s dependent on whether I get into winter school. Which is pretty unlikely and I sort of don’t want to get in. I already missed out on about a month of last summer in favour of a European winter so I’m craving some sun-time. Plus, I applied for it before I remembered that I want to do the internship in South Africa.

On the other hand, if I go to China in January then I can just go to South Africa in June/July, which will be cheaper anyway and the weather will still be pleasant.

I really shouldn’t be complaining about not having enough sun. My parents are taking me on a Pacific Islands cruise in March anyway.

Either way, I want to know which one I should be getting excited about!

Anyone want to convince me of the merits of a winter in China?
