All I need in life is a puppy who knows she should lay a couple of comforting paws on my lap while I’m take home examing.

Exactly. A horse wouldn’t get put down because someone stood behind it, scared it and got kicked. Everyone knows horses need to be treated with respect, or you might get hurt. So it’s very frustrating that I can’t safely tie up my dog without stressing that she might be put down because some total moron who thinks they’re a dog whisperer put their hands near her angry, barking jaws and got bitten.

Can’t touch this doo-do-do-doo.

One of the greatest annoyances in my life is people who think that the “don’t pat strangers’ dogs without their owners’ permission” rule does not apply to them, or to cute little fluffy white dogs.

Ziggy’s greatest pleasure is going for a walk. In parks she runs off leash without bothering anyone. She’s usually quite friendly.

But there are two exceptions: if you come to our front door, or if she is tied up outside a store. In those situations she thinks she is a ferocious guard dog. She will bark like mad, and if you ignore that she is barking at you, and think that you can put your hands all up in her personal space to pat her (as SO MANY PEOPLE do), I can’t guarantee that she will not try to bite you.

I’ve tried giving her treats to occupy herself with while I quickly shop (she drops them at her feet until I come back) and I’ve tried tying her up discreetly in back alleys and around corners (but there aren’t always poles available and Brunswick St is always swarming with people). Humiliatingly, I might have to buy her a muzzle. It’s a pity because she really is a lovely dog. She’s only nipped at people so far but I worry that some idiot will come along soon who ignores all the signals she’s giving off that she does not want to be touched, and she will bite them.

If a dog is obviously agitated, in that it is angrily barking at you, don’t pat it. It doesn’t matter how cute it is, that fluffy little face has teeth, and even the nicest dog will use them if it feels threatened.

So if you see my little Ziggy briefly tied up on Brunswick St, please please please leave her alone.
